Constance and Robert McGee lost their 13-year-old son Shane in a 1991 auto accident. Their GM station wagon was idling at a toll booth when it was struck by a trailer which came loose from a pickup. The collision punctured the gas tank, causing a flash fire. The McGee's sued GM, and the Hollywood, Florida, jury agreed that the company was negligent, holding
GM 55% liable. The verdict, for $60 million in total, consists only of compensatory damages.

TRAILER GUARDIAN KEEPS BOATS HITCHED UP
"Montana-based Safety Products sent us a new accessory called Trailer Guardian that is designed to prevent decoupling while towing, as well as trailer theft, by locking the trailer coupler to the ball mount.
The company claims that this system prevents decoupling even when
the ball is smaller than the coupler, when the coupler is not locked
down or if the ball nut comes loose and falls off. We decided to find
out if these claims rang true.
We tested the Trailer Guardian with our Nissan Titan project truck. Installation was straightforward: First we removed the ball from the drawbar, then we fastened the Trailer Guardian to the drawbar using the ball mount and nut. Next, we coupled the trailer to the ball and adjusted the legs of the Trailer Guardian so that the "guard" was as close to the top of the coupler as possible, then we locked it in position.
To test the company's decoupling claim, we jacked up the tongue with a floor jack until the back of the truck began to lift, and tried to separate the ball from the unlocked coupler by jumping on the truck bumper. The Trailer Guardian prevented the coupler from detaching from the ball.
Next, we removed the ball nut and tried to separate the ball and coupler from the drawbar by driving the truck forward and back. The ball rocked on the drawbar each time we changed direction, but the Trailer Guardian prevented separation once again. Our rating: ****

TESTIMONIALS
"I purchased a Trailer Guardian and am I so very grateful that I did. I was towing a 1956 Chevy pick-up using the Trailer Guardian back from Hot August Nights in Reno, Nevada. I tow the truck backwards (both vehicles had the backends together). I was on a busy 6-lane expressway in California. An SUV, traveling at a high rate of speed, struck us from the rear hitting my pick-up. The force of the collision was so hard, the engine was pushed into the truck passenger compartment as well as bending the ball mount and hitch up several inches. The only thing that kept my pick-up attached to my vehicle was the Trailer Guardian, otherwise my towed vehicle would have uncoupled and crashed into other vehicles. The tow truck operator and highway patrol were amazed to see that the towed truck was still attached given the impact. Amazingly, the Trailer Guardian was so minimally damaged, no welds were broken, and with a little work done on it, I am able to still use it. In fact, I will not tow anything again without using the
Trailer Guardian. Thanks guys for this product."

"I saw the Trailer Guardian at the SEMA show and it appears to be a fantastic product... Thank you very much for your email responses... I followed your directions instead and my order went through. I'm looking forward to receiving the Trailer Guardian. As I mentioned, I saw it at SEMA and I had to have one. I'm going to feel a lot safer pulling my race car with the Trailer Guardian installed. Thanks again for the excellent customer service... I just received my Trailer Guardian in good order - have already installed it and I am quite happy with it. I wanted to take the time to thank you for following through when I initially had trouble ordering. I really appreciate the excellent customer service."

"I must tell you that I love the Trailer Guardian. It's easy to use and provides a level of both security and safety that I couldn't find in any other hitch lock. I got the device in time for my long haul to Denver, and I appreciate both the efficiency of your company and your phone call to follow-up on my questions."

While loading my 1999 Yamaha XL 1200 Limited onto my 2003 FE Tandem Watercraft Trailer, the tongue popped off the ball. This came as a surprise as I had it latched and a lock on it. As I looked at the tongue and ball, I found the trailer latch to be loose and the nut backing off. Realizing this happening at the shop was an inconvenience and on the road could have been the end of my skis, I started looking for a cure. Reading a watercraft magazine,
I saw your ad in the back for Trailer Guardian. I now realize that a small investment now will save me much more in the future.
